    Ayumi

(I totally just didn't pick a generic Japanese persons name that could belong to any obscure manga)

best appearance is almost impossible to draw a bead on, given that manga is heavily centred around form over function.

Alucard was awesome for me when I was 15 but I've kinda grown out of him now... His personality doesn't do it for me either.

Spike from Bebop is pretty cool but again sometimes I tire of his personality, wavering between "I couldn't care" and WAAAAAY too much emotional baggage.

Vash I think is fairly up there... plenty of Naruto characters who look both badass and have cool personalities, Jiraiya for example. Naruto himself is worthy I think on the basis of how his personality has been developing throughout the series.

Yeah man Alucard is old news. I also agree that it really depends on what your standard of epic is. What about Kamina or Simon? Those guys were epic stacked on epic. Simon in the Tenga Toppa flinging galaxies is an end all to me.

KENSHIIRRROO WATATATATATATATA I vote for him just because of that.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for Dark Schneider. It takes a rare kind of epic to rip your own heart out just to cure your adopted daughter/ex-girlfriend (it's not quite as messed-up as it may sound).

TTGL definitely gets epic points in terms of the original meaning "on a big scale"... Can't think of any other fiction at all, let alone anime where they grow to sizes larger than galaxies lol.

Gutts gets points in terms of him being so epically outnumbered and occasionally overpowered and the crapsack world of Berserk generally being epically abysmal and horrific.

Edward "Whitebeard" Newgate from One Piece.
He was 72, and with all these injuries, he died standing on his feet.

Now that's what I call epic.

    Mihawk or Gol D Roger.

Mihawk 'cuz he has an epic beard. He is also said to be the strongest swordsman pirate, he also never fought seriously up untill now, but still completely owned some people.

Gol D roger, because he was the pirate king, so he probably was the strongest character.

finally someone that is correct. And best of all he's the most epic while being the most casual about it.

Bunshichi is awesome, as is Masataka.

Newgate would be a contender if it was epic in terms of contextual feats, but, as stated in the OP, its epic in terms of LOOKS (character design aesthetic) and personality.

Since I've already submitted my top pick from Bastard I feel inclined to list my runners up:

Vahn was pretty badass in the Escaflowne movie. Especially in the beginning when he drops onto the airship and annihilates the entire crew in a matter of minutes.

I'd have to generally agree with Pumpkin about Gurren Lagann (big surprise considering my sig) although Vandread came pretty close to that scale towards the end.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but Tenchi Masaki was pretty epic in his first couple movies and towards the end of that first ova.

I wouldn't feel complete if I didn't mention good 'ol Demon Eyes Kyo. I still get chills every time I hear Mumyo Jinpu Ryo Satsujin Ken 'cause i know someone's about to lose form and burst into a fine red mist. And there's nothing they can do to stop it.

Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke definitely deserves mention not only for being able to take out pretty much anything with a demon-reinforced arrow, but also for barely flinching in response to a musket ball through the chest and the loss of at least a gallon of blood.

Midou Ban & Akabane Kuroudo from Get Backers are both pretty epic with Midou summoning what I assume is Jörmungandr and smashing whatever's in front of him whenever he gets angry. Aside from storing his attack razors inside his body, Akabane seems to be unkillable and his personality puts Jack the Ripper in mind.

Sagara Sousuke from Full Metal Panic also has his moment rather predictably at the climax of any major arc in either the first series or the ova (the second raid). Considering the drive that makes his mech special runs on imagination and willpower the epicness of these final battles isn't much of a surprise.

I also forgot to mention Monkey D. Dragon, fabled to be the most wanted man.
