Greg my man, long time no see bro! Anyway I dont think democracy now is liberal in nature as they consider themselves a progressive grassroots organisation who give independent and international journalists a platform if you want liberal try al jazeera (most of the time) or 100% liberal bias loons of msnbc rachel maddow.

Meh, domecracynow and TYT belong in the same cesspool together with msnbs. Btw, you managed to piss me off in mostest friendliest way you possibly could.

Media "debate" aside, Detroit had it coming since late 60s.

Outsourcing is not a problem. You do realize that if doing business elsewhere is more profitable than outsourcing will happen or the gov. will prohibit it and cause even more damage because domestic goods won't be as readily available (price will be high and their availability will be lower).

The problem is/are those who make domestic business unprofitable. And those are legislators and a bunch of lazy, uncompetitive producers.

How exactly outsourcing as such is responsible for a number of crappy entrepreneurs? Moreover, where does this article say that owner of that factory was a western businessman? And even if the owner is from the west, would it be any better if that factory's owner was from Bangladesh as well? Most of Far-east is dirt poor, and no, it's not America's or Common Wealth's fault. Neither is it an issue of their government not passing enough regulations.

I am from the Detroit area. (My place is 20 min north. Not such a shitty area.)

Few points. We have had several corrupt African-american Mayors .. take that back screw nationality they are black and because they just are American. They didn't help their own credibility in civil rights by any means.

Our auto industry couldn't keep centralized as before to compete with a larger world market. So many new companies have made competition and honestly several better cars. Not that the "BIG THREE" didn't make some quality just not consistent.

The city grew around the auto industry and the auto industry had to take measures to compete with a world market to stay in business. The whole economic crash only made that worse. Inflation rose/ gas prices rose/ cost of transportation rose/ Jobs cut back hours and workers, plants. In short less money to buy cars so they kept their vehicles longer. spent the same on food but got less.

If a plant shut down. The people cant pay for their food let alone their taxes. Honestly I think UAW bloated the income levels and caused their own issues with cut backs. I know some people in that field who did too little for too much over the years. And taxes were needed for the city to function.

Detroit actually tried to fix up downtown for a while around superbowl. Or something. The problem was it was like a stage back drop and if you looked behind the curtain it was pretty shitty. Like toto pulling the curtain during the wizard of OZ.

I don't go down there because its infested with crime. Not just by blacks but everyone. Desperate and corrupt people. Only for a few sporting events do I take that chance. Its sad really it used to be a beautiful city. But people couldn't afford to maintain and it became a graveyard for houses.

Perhaps it shouldn't have been bailed out/centralized? Perhaps it should've been sold instead?

I would have to take a good look in comparison how they have actually done since the bail out to answer that question... And only 2 of the 3 actually accepted that bail out. to my recollection. I think ford maintained its own and bounced back.

The reason why it's bankrupt is because manufacturing cars in Detroit was no longer profitable. Detroit had to make it profitable or start adjusting to decline back in 60s.

Unions and the mindset of the people that support them is the issue. People should not expect large paychecks, excessive benefits, and pension plans for doing routine work that just about anyone can do.

Americans seem to have a lack of awareness of what unions do, not surprised since there has always been a huge propganda attack on them, since when was asking for better pay (some idiots think they get milion dollar pay checks or something) and safer workplace a bad thing? Politicians want you guys to compete on the global market and what they mean is those poor fucks in china (foxconn) and bangladesh. Too much corporate power in the USA, nothing holding them back now that the labour movement is dead.

You americans had a very vibrant labour history that is now dead. Always blame the unions not the corporations its always the tactic.

that's because we are so far removed from the conditions that drove people to forme unions that many of us have forgotten just how shitty employees will be treated if there are no consequences. and the mafia muscling in their way into union hierarchy hasn't helped either.
